Sunny Summer Day - Me, Myself And the Empty Soul Ep ( Letterbox Records UK 2008)

sunny summer day

Indonesian Sunny Summer Day was one of the bands we featured on our recent “Summer’s Here” compilation here at Eardrums. Now, they’ve got a new download-only EP available on Letterbox Records, and after listening to the six songs on “me, myself and the empty soul” I can give this release my warm recommendations.

This is jangly, melodic indie pop, and the band is more than a little inspired by bands from the legendary Sarah Records. Some of their songs may sound a bit too much like old heroes (Primal Scream from around the c86 time, The Sea Urchins, The Field Mice, The Orchids, 14 iced bears, Brighter + others), and on especially one of their songs (not one of the ep tracks) I find myself singing the words from Primal Scream’s “Velocity Girl” to the Sunny Summer Day-song. I’m not sure if that is a good thing, but for people like me, who love this kind of music, it’s easy to ignore, and just sing along…

All of the songs on the ep holds a high quality, and I especially like the catchy “You’re the one for me” and “Happy in the summer”. As expected, a fine release from Sunny Summer Day!

Homicide-MC Homeless split album
This is another delayed projects planned before the posse broke up. Representin anarcho hiphop to the fullest, MC Homeless is a great MC from Ohio, US. He sounds like Sage Francis reading too many Profane Existance or Rolling Thunder and write rhymes and love letters under a Food Not Bombs’ table. Breaking borders between personal and political issues and been shared stages with fellows like The Coup and The Requiem. Homicide will share their 3 songs on 12″ vinyl including a bangin remix from Jay of D’army. Diseased Records will put this out only on limited 450 pieces.
Tracklisting :
HOMICIDE’s Side
1. Pathos

Sunny Summer Day first EP (Clouberry Records)

Posted by egi 4 May, 2008 (3) Comment

sunny summer day first ep

Sunny summer day first Ep’s “called happy in the summer” released by Cloudberry Records (USA) included three song titles like “happy in the summer” and “something in your eyes” would suggest - either amazingly idealistic or amazingly cynical. money’s on the former, but there’s something attractive, if still a little rough, about them - “you’re the one for me” itself, coming on like we would imagine some early sarah band demos would have, is typical of sunny summer day’s charm.

The songs highly reminiscent of the jangly melancholic indie pop days of Sarah Records. And it’s even easy to suspect that their name was inspired from this band on Sarah Record called Another Sunny Day.

There are three songs here, none of them is absolutely major or innovative but none of them on the other side is weak or poor. Their songwriting is delicate, soft and melodic, one hundred per cent twee. Almost out of time, they could be easily mixed with glorious eps from Brighter, The Sea Urchins or Blueboy.
